There are choices to be made, do you want to earn money writing blogs? Do you want to earn money being a webmaster, web designer, online programmer?
I’ve decided my true niche is webmaster/techy. So now I need some web properties that are going to generate some revenue. Here I also have choices, buy or build.
I decided to do both, I have a couple I have built, and a few I have bought.
The difference between the two is that my newly built ones, just like a new blog will take sometime to establish themselves. The bought ones already have either an established income stream OR high traffic that I believe I can turn into a revenue stream.
Next choice, AdSense or others? I’m using both depending on what I believe will work best on the site in question.
Adsense does me fairly well, but it’s not always the best choice. For instance I am also using Interclick and fastclick.com, both of these networks provide various kinds of creative for use on sites.
They do have some requirements for entry into their programs, but with the amount of traffic I am currently generating that hasn’t been a problem for me.
You do need to match the type of Ad to your site, for instance if your trying to build a community I wouldn’t be putting popunders on, so you do need to pick carefully.
At present I’m looking at around 350-400 (us$) a month from my sites, which isn’t bad, but you have to factor in that I also need to make enough to cover the expense of buying and continuing to run the sites.
I haven’t added up all the expenses yet, but my current expenses in aquiring sites would be around the $3.2k (us$) mark, I’m planning on spending another $800 (us$) within a week, which will probably put me up around the $550 (us$) a month mark, possibly more as the sites I am buying are not currently optimised for generating revenue.
In theory I should be able to recoup my investment in less than 8 months using the figures above, I believe I should be able to do it in well less than that and I am happy with that timeframe.
Additional expenses have also been incurred, for instance I have bought licenses for various pieces of software, I have upgraded my virtual server to better handle the load, and I currently have a graphic design studio doing a new design for one of the sites I purchased.
Obviously it’s not as easy as handing over the money to someone, taking control of a site, and then making money out of it, so please ensure you do your homework if you are considering doing what I am doing.
