Hi, my name is Drew and about 6 months ago I became unemployed when the section of the Company I had worked at for the last 6 years was closed down.
I live in a small City called Dunedin which is on the South Island of New Zealand, we came here as a lifestyle choice and we are not that interested in moving to the big smoke.
I have applied for a few jobs around town, but so far I have had not had a positive outcome from any of them. On July 17 a story on slashdot caught my eye about a guy making a good living from blogging, problogger.net, I’d recently started blogging and thought it might be worth a try.
So after having a bit of a think about it, I decided to go for it.
Because I’m not working, I had been running my blog and some other community sites from my adsl line at home, I decided the first step was that I needed to get a virtual server somewhere.
While hunting for a good server supplier I started reading as much as I could and thinking about what I read. I’ll say that again because it is very important: “I thought about what I read”.
One of the things that was made pretty clear to me was that it would be better if I found a topic with these attributes:
- Narrow topic.
- Broad appeal.
- Something I knew about.
- Not hugely cyclic.
- Not negatively impacted by changes in the economy.
- Long lasting.
- Something not to difficult to become a major player in.
I believe I found my topic, but I’m running in stealth mode as far as what it is on this website at present. I actually believe that this is possibly a major revenue generating idea. My initial idea has expanded into something much more than a blog.
Once I had my topic, I decided it might be fun to document my success on a seperate blog, so I created this site for that purpose.
So this site is about my journey and experiences in making a living online. This site is not my major idea, but who knows it might make me a few dollars once I put some advertising on it.
My next post is probably going to be a weekly report, although this first one will actually cover two weeks, and then I should be able to start reporting things as they happen.
